My first year in this village was hard, but I didn’t give up. I loved being a midwife even though it was very challenging for me to get started here. I decided I would visit all the pregnant women and speak with them heart to heart. I also started visiting people if I knew they had a fever, cold or cough. I helped them by checking their symptoms and giving them medication if they needed it. I didn’t charge for my services. I spent my own savings for almost a year without any income because I believed that one day I would win the people’s hearts.

Helping Alinesi Avoid Another Tragedy

Alinesi is 25 years old and 6 months pregnant. This is her fourth pregnancy, but she has only one child who is 4 years old. She lost her other two babies due to miscarriages when she was 7 months pregnant. When she got pregnant the first time, there was no health worker in her community. So she did not have good information about how to take care of herself, and what danger signs to watch for. Also, with no health worker around, she waited until the seventh month of her pregnancy to go to the prenatal clinic.
