Primary Care

It was a busy week. We had a two-day refresher meeting which I like because we get a chance to review all the issues we previously learned so we don’t forget. We also have the chance to ask any questions we might face in the field. This month’s refresher training was on managing childhood diseases. Now, we will be able to treat pneumonia and diarrhea at the household level and refer cases with severe disease to the hospital. It feels good that we are now able to give primary treatment for these illnesses! I also invited people to National Immunization Day which was held this week.

Bundles of Joy

Many vaccinations took place this week as we welcomed three beautiful, healthy newborns into my community. What joy! Building trust takes time. But after so many healthy newborns were delivered, many of the communities have embraced me and expressed their confidence in my abilities. It is wonderful to have a job where I can improve the well-being of others through my work and learn about their different cultures, customs, and values.

Bringing Care Far and Wide

I love what I do. Save the Children trained me to care for mothers and newborns, and they give me the supplies that I need to do my job – things like scales, backpacks and thermometers. As a health worker, I get to meet and learn about new people all the time – and I really enjoy this! But most importantly, I’m glad to know that the work that I am doing is benefiting people each day. Both my husband and I are health workers. Each day we wake up early to visit patients.

Winter Pregnancies

This has been a very cold winter. I think this is the coldest year in the history of Bangladesh! I wonder how my little babies are doing in such cold temperatures. I quickly go out for my work in the cold morning for house visits. With the grace of Almighty I found all of the children are well and fine. I held a courtyard session this week with pregnant mothers and talked about the importance of extra food intake during pregnancy. I also showed them the proper way to breastfeed. They seemed to like my session!

Preventing a Hospital Visit

As usual, I began my week making house visits – today I had three. Two were common flu cases. With a little bit of medicine and rest, the children were fine. The other one, however, I was really concerned about – she had pneumonia. Upon my first visit, I could tell the little girl was not doing well, and the mother looked frightened and unsure of what to do.
