A Child With a Serious Respiratory Infection

Daouda is 10 months old. Both of his parents are from Satiguila village, and they have three children: a girl and two boys, including Daouda. The parents – Adama and Sata – are very responsible. They have used family planning, so their children’s births were evenly spaced. Sata gave birth to all three children at the health center, and she makes sure her children have regular check ups with the local doctor.

Great Needs For Health Care

My village is located beside a river. People from the village use the river for their personal needs and then the children swim and play in the same water, which is not good for their health. It’s very common for the children here to get diarrhea, coughs, colds, fevers and pneumonia. So there is a lot of need for my services.

My first year in this village was hard, but I didn’t give up. I loved being a midwife even though it was very challenging for me to get started here. I decided I would visit all the pregnant women and speak with them heart to heart. I also started visiting people if I knew they had a fever, cold or cough. I helped them by checking their symptoms and giving them medication if they needed it. I didn’t charge for my services. I spent my own savings for almost a year without any income because I believed that one day I would win the people’s hearts.

Anthony’s Fever was Actually Malaria

Recently, a boy in my village named Anthony developed a fever and diarrhea. His forehead was hot and he stopped playing. His mother thought he was coming down with the flu or that his teeth were coming in and causing the fever, so she wasn’t worried. But during the night, Anthony’s fever got even worse and he became agitated. In the morning, the mother rushed with Anthony to my house. I examined the boy and told the mother that he had malaria.
