Return to profileThe outlook in Mali can be, at times, overbearingly bleak. More than 90 percent of the population lives on less than two dollars a day, and less than one third of pregnant women in Mali get the prenatal checkups they so desperately need. So, sadly, it comes as no surprise that Mali has the sixth-highest mortality rate for children under the age of five – 238 per 1,000 live births. In other words, choose four children you know and love; now imagine that in five years time, only three may still be alive. But despite the dire situation in Mali, there is hope. Save the Children first began implementing its programs in Mali more than twenty years ago. Our work takes place in three of the country’s eight regions, with a population of more than 4.8 million children and adults. In the past few years, we’ve worked to expand access to community-based health and preventative services to keep the country’s children safe and help promote a greater attention to and understanding of their health and well-being. Through the establishment of food banks and other reforms, Save the Children has helped deal a dramatic blow to the effects of hunger on Mali’s most vulnerable children. And by building classrooms throughout the country, we have enabled more and more students to enroll in school and have given these schools the opportunity to secure greater government support as a result. In Mali, many of our low-cost health interventions have allowed millions of newborns and children to win the battle against threats posed by chronic conditions and diseases like severe diarrhea and malaria. Ultimately, these efforts have helped put the country on a steady course toward a bright, promising future.
