The Cold Season is Coming to an End

The cold has lessened a bit. It is bearable now and the children are suffering less from common coughs and colds. I went on a home visit and found one baby with a mild cold. Her mother assured me that she could take care of her daughter, but just to be safe, I counted the little girl’s breaths with my ARI timer and checked her temperature to make sure she did not have pneumonia.

Also, a group of visitors came from the United States to observe my work. I took them around the village. They saw my work and talked to the mothers and the children I serve. They said they were impressed with what I am doing for the mothers and children here, which made me very happy.

One morning while I was on my way to a home visit, a mother asked me if I had a few minutes to come to her house and examine her baby. She said her 3-year-old son had a mild temperature and had a little difficulty breathing. I felt the boy’s head and counted his breaths. I checked for other danger signs of severe pneumonia, but fortunately those signs were absent. He had pneumonia, but it was not severe. He needed to be treated immediately, so I gave the mother a bottle of cotrim syrup and gave the boy a spoonful right away. I explained the dosage to the mother. She should continue giving him the syrup twice a day for five days.
